To provide statewide leadership, advocacy, technical assistance, and promote collaboration among parents, educators, students, communities and other agencies to ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education.
What is Special Education?
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires school districts to provide a free appropriate public education to any student that has met disability eligibility standards and whose needs cannot be met in the general education setting without the provision of special education supports and services in the least restrictive environment for the student.
The term "special education" is defined as "specially designed instruction" to meet the needs of a child with a disability. This instruction can occur in a variety of settings including but not limited to the following: the general education classroom, a special education classroom, at home, and/or in the hospital.
