This summer the TN School Readiness Model was approved by the Governor's Children's Cabinet and was introduced to an audience of 1,000 early childhood educators at the Early Childhood Summit. The TN School Readiness Model is intended to raise awareness about the role of families, communities, and schools collectively to create a nurturing environment to support children's health, development, and education starting from birth.

At this summit a new website www.KidCentralTN.org was introduced as well. The website was designed to connect families with information about children's education, development, and health accessed by their zip code.

Smart From the Start

School Success starts early. The Department of Education wants to help you to be your child's first and most important teacher. This is the reason the Department has initiated Smart From the Start.

Your child depends on you for a good early start to learning. The attention, the nurturing and the activities you provide in early childhood are essential to the development of linkages with your baby's brain. You can do the job by spending time with your child, talking directly to him/her and reading stories aloud.

It is the time of year when schools throw open their doors for conferences and parent meetings.  Have you ever been to a school meeting and not understood a term or acronym used by the teacher or principal?  Help is on the way.  The International Association for K-12 Online Learning has developed a comprehensive dictionary of educational terms.
